Ole Miss beat a ranked Louisville team at a neutral site and the fan base spent two days arguing about the first half. Steven Willis is joined by Ole Miss legend Bill Flowers to explain why you can step off the ledge — and where the real concern actually is. The conversation everybody is having is about the coverage busts. The conversation worth having is about identity: Ole Miss came out conservative, in the box, run-first, and it did not look like the spread offense John David Baker was hired to run. Bill Flowers calls it vanilla. Steven's take is sharper — the script leaned on Trinidad Chambliss and Kewan Lacy in the passing game so heavily that the offense only opened up once Lacy went out. Lacy is a great player. He cannot be the focal point. Three days to Charlotte. Ten days to LSU, with College GameDay coming to Oxford for the conference opener for both teams. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 [FILL FROM CASTMAGIC AFTER RECORDING] 📌 THREE THINGS 1. The identity question is the real one. Bill Flowers saw a team come out flat and an offense that played Saban-conservative — heavy in the box, light on motion, trying to establish the run conventionally instead of running the ground game out of spread the way Lane Kiffin did. His question for the season: does Pete Golding put his own stamp on this team, or does he spend the year distancing himself from Kiffin? As Flowers puts it, Kiffin is a great coach for a reason, but he also has characteristics you do not want to carry forward. 2. Caleb Odom is why Deuce Alexander got loose. Everybody points at Odom's 35-yard touchdown. The play that mattered was the 18-yard catch on the game-winning drive, and he got it because that secondary was locked onto number one. Flowers explains the mechanism: put the tight end up the seam and the safety has to come down, and the moment a safety comes down you are exposed to a receiver running 23 miles an hour. Pick your poison. Once Ole Miss started using Odom, the momentum of the whole offense changed. 3. Charlotte is a scrimmage and everybody knows it. Charlotte lost to The Citadel in overtime. Ole Miss is laying 47.5 in the home opener. Flowers does not expect the starters to play much past halftime, does not expect John David Baker to show a single wrinkle he wants saved for LSU, and predicts 48-14. The value of Saturday is depth reps, health, and a clean base offense heading into September 19. Also in this episode: the snap over Chambliss's head on the third play that set the tone, why Ole Miss having the SEC co-offensive player of the week AND the special teams player of the week has not calmed anybody down, Horatio Fields and his quiet five catches, why Steven expects more 11 personnel and a real Johntay Cook role on Saturday, and the SEC's federal filing against LSU. A federal judge hears the SEC's arguments for a temporary restraining order against LSU at 1 p.m. Wednesday — and granting it may clear the path for the conference's expulsion vote scheduled for Thursday. Steven Willis explains why today's hearing matters more than tomorrow's vote, and what any of it does to Ole Miss-LSU on September 19. Also: the framing that the SEC keeps beating LSU in court is wrong. Every order actually issued has gone LSU's way, and the federal judge in Alabama has ruled on nothing. What the SEC has done is escalate. Then Pete Golding, who stood at the podium 1-0 after the best win of the weekend and told everybody not to look at the scoreboard. And three players: Patrick Kutas, Kam Franklin and Caleb Odom. Three days to Charlotte. Ten to LSU. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 Pending legal showdown with SEC 04:44 Conference self-government proposal 09:58 Debating LSU and SEC future 13:37 Game day gear from Pants Store 15:44 Pete Golding on early coaching games 18:18 Discussing Game 1 Reactions 21:32 Promoting FanDuel and Indeed 24:49 Tight end versatility and rumors 28:16 Casual outro and farewell 📌 THREE THINGS 1. Ole Miss is the first domino. LSU has not played a conference game — they opened against Clemson. Their first SEC game on the schedule is the one in Vaught-Hemingway on September 19. That makes this the cheapest week of the season to expel them: no conference results to void, no standings to rewrite. It also means whatever those presidents decide lands on Ole Miss first. Four outcomes for the 19th: conference game, non-conference game, played under protest, or no game. 2. Golding refused to sell the win. "Yes, the outcome was 1-0. But if you're just looking at that and not looking at the guts of this thing, then we're going to be on the other side of this before too long." He ruled out the frightening explanation for the secondary — "their Jimmies are better than our Joes, that's a bad feeling… that wasn't this" — and named the real one: day-one camp calls that weren't communicated. Asked about Johntay Cook, he said plainly he was surprised, and that it has to be corrected. 3. Caleb Odom couldn't see. He explained that bad vision he never got fixed was behind last season's drops. He wears contacts now, added weight to block defensive ends, and the 18-yard third-down conversion on the game-winning drive was a play the offense had rehearsed in every two-minute drill since spring. Ole Miss legend John Fourcade came on to look back at Louisville one more time — and disagreed with this show about the one thing everybody has been using to explain the second half. Four days to Charlotte. Eleven to LSU. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 Adjusting offensive strategy 03:59 Critiquing offensive play strategy 06:55 Game strategy and opponent analysis 12:15 Getting College Football Tickets Easy 15:13 Support the channel and subscribe 19:05 Facing top teams early in season 20:39 Engaging with listeners and sponsors 23:53 Mississippi State's potential in SEC 26:39 Remembering Mike Ditilli 📌 THREE THINGS 1. The first half wasn't dominant, it was lucky. Fourcade's read is that if Louisville's quarterback completes two more throws early, this is a different football game — the secondary had busted coverages in the first half too, and the scoreboard hid it. He tied it directly to the lack of live tackling in summer practice, and to a habit he sees everywhere now: players wrapping up from the waist trying to strip the ball instead of putting the runner on the ground. 2. Stop running inside zone. His argument is specific — a back set five or six yards deep in the gun lets a defender sit at the line and watch the handoff. He wants off-tackle runs and the stretch play, which lets the back bounce and cut back, and which pulls the tight end in as an extra blocker. Then you fake the stretch and hit that tight end down the middle. His question for the staff: why did it take a half to start throwing to the tight ends at all? 3. What he liked. The defensive front rotation, six or seven linemen who can play a full game, and a linebacker group he called genuinely good. And on Kewan Lacy: he compared the build to Alvin Kamara — an outside back, not a between-the-tackles back — and said the same about Makhi Frazier. Plus his read on LSU-Clemson and whether the ACC can hang with SEC speed. 🦈 EVERYDAYER CLUB — ad-free, plus members-only Discord. 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🌐 THE OLE MISS HUB — https://olemisshub.com 💬 THE LOOM PRIVATE DISCORD, FREE — https://discord.gg/KF3dtcQJhC 🎧 EVERY PLATFORM — https://link.chtbl.com/LOOleMiss?sid=YouTube 🎟️ GAMETIME — code LOCKEDON for $20 off your first purchase. 💼 INDEED — $75 sponsored job credit at https://indeed.com/podcast . 🔧 SUPPLYHOUSE — https://supplyhouse.com/tm , promo code SH5COLLEGE for 5% off. 👕 PONCHO — https://ponchooutdoors.com/lockedon for $10 off and free shipping. Ole Miss scored ten points in the first half against Louisville and thirty-one in the second. Same players, same coordinator, same offensive line. Steven Willis breaks down what actually changed — including the tight end who just became this offense's second weapon, and the Johntay Cook conversation nearly everybody got backwards. Four days to Charlotte. Eleven to LSU. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 LSU and Ole Miss analysis 05:31 Jameson Williams' impact on defense 09:56 Buying college football tickets 11:38 Using Indeed for hiring 16:00 Jalyn Crawford's standout performance 17:43 Evaluating Janelle Aguero's Performance 22:15 Sponsor message: SupplyHouse benefits 24:31 Discount offer and Ole Miss stats 28:11 Joining the Everyday Club 📌 THREE THINGS 1. Caleb Odom is the second weapon. Three catches, 66 yards, 22 per catch, a touchdown, and the 18-yard grab that set up the game-winning field goal — in twenty fewer snaps than Luke Hasz. Deuce Alexander was the plan and delivered 159 yards and two 62-yard touchdowns, earning SEC Offensive Player of the Week in John David Baker's debut as coordinator. Pete Golding reached for a Jameson Williams comparison afterward, then added the part almost nobody picked up: more guys are going to know where number one is. 2. Johntay Cook started the game and played 37 snaps, eighteen of them pass snaps. He finished with one target, in the end zone, broken up. The complaint going around Monday was that the staff ignored him. That isn't what happened — and the real question is harder. 3. Half that secondary was never available. Shareef Denson, who started throughout fall camp, did not play a single snap. Antonio Kite went out after six. Meanwhile Jalyn Crawford played 64 snaps and was the best tackling defensive back on the field, and nobody said his name. The honest counterweight: Jeff Brohm got Ole Miss to bust the same coverage twice, and Golding admitted he put too much on his backups in the second half. Plus the Week 2 board, where Ole Miss went from the smallest spread in the SEC to the second-biggest in seven days. Odds via FanDuel Sportsbook. 21+ and present in select states. Gambling problem? Ole Miss 41, Louisville 38. Lucas Carneiro from 48 yards as time expired. The No. 9 Rebels led 38-24 in the fourth quarter, gave up 14 straight points, and needed an 18-yard Trinidad Chambliss completion to Caleb Odom to set up the game-winner. The two teams combined for more than 600 yards of offense in the second half alone. Ole Miss beat a ranked team playing nowhere near its best football. Instant reaction, live from the postgame. 📌 THREE THINGS The specialists decided it. All week the conversation on this show was about a group nobody previews — Lucas Carneiro, Oscar Bird and Caleb Blankenship all returning, while Louisville still had not named a kicker or a punter two days before kickoff. A three-point game ended on a 48-yard field goal, held by the punter. That was the clearest edge on the field and it was the one almost nobody was talking about. What went wrong, and it isn't a mystery. Turnovers, penalties and communication problems in the first half — the exact thing Pete Golding volunteered about his own mock game a week ago. Then a 14-point fourth-quarter lead handed back to a coach who has beaten a top-ten team in each of the last three seasons. What actually held up. Caleb Odom becoming a factor was a stated key going into the game and he made the play that won it. Deuce Alexander, the only returning primary receiver, went 62 yards for a touchdown. And a defense that gave up too much late still made enough plays in the first half to build the lead that survived. Plus an honest accounting of the predictions — including whose was closest, and it wasn't anybody in Oxford. 📻 Charlotte is Saturday. 📌 THREE THINGS 1. Why this wait was different. Ole Miss didn't lose a game and go home to plan for next year — Ole Miss was one stop from playing for a national championship, with a head coach who had already left for another job. There was no next week and no clean ending, and that's what made eight months feel like a decade. 2. What's actually different now. Trinidad Chambliss is back, and last season Ole Miss was running a retrofitted offense built for somebody else while he operated it. This is the first year it's been built for him. Kewan Lacy is back after 306 carries, 1,567 yards and 24 touchdowns, and John David Baker has already said he won't ask that of him twice. The defensive front is deeper than the 2024 group that everybody remembers. 3. What decides tonight. Louisville lost ten scholarship offensive linemen and returns one starter, while Jeff Brohm — who has beaten a top-ten team in each of the last three seasons — starts a quarterback making his first career start. Ole Miss is the better football team on paper. Paper doesn't tackle anybody. 📻 LIVE POSTGAME 15 to 30 minutes after the final whistle. Michael Katz of the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal spent six weeks and eleven interviews on one Kewan Lacy story — and the centerpiece is a single high school run that every person he talked to brought up unprompted. Game day. No. 9 Ole Miss vs No. 24 Louisville at Nissan Stadium, 7:30 ET on ABC — the only ranked-versus-ranked game on the Week 1 schedule. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 Strong defensive line prospects 03:58 Louisville run game challenges 07:41 Discussing Ole Miss front 7 10:20 Why the shirt is popular 16:23 Starting research while on vacation 18:44 High school football talent insights 20:35 Impressive touchdown run 26:28 Expectations for Week 1 Game 27:37 Podcast membership and live show info 📌 THREE THINGS 1. The Lacy reporting. Katz asked every coach and teammate what the craziest thing was they'd seen Lacy do on a field, and they all named the same play against South Oak Cliff — a run where he spun out of two tacklers, got to the perimeter, ran through two more, and had two more fall off him. The opposing head coach, who has three state titles and coached against Kyler Murray and Matthew Stafford, called it one of the best plays he has seen a running back make. Katz also learned Lacy split carries as a Lancaster junior with Kyson Brown, now at Arizona State, and didn't become a national recruit until his senior year. 2. Why this defensive line is different from the 2024 group. That team had elite top-end talent — Walter Nolen, Princely Umanmielen, JJ Pegues, Jared Ivey — but a real drop-off when anyone came off the field. Katz's read on this year is depth: you can take Will Echoles out and not lose much. He also expects Echoles to be a first-round pick and thinks Kam Franklin will make a lot of money. 3. The structural reason a front seven wins games. When your three-technique and your nose demand double teams, four offensive linemen are occupied, the linebackers run free, and the ends get single-blocked. That's what Alabama and Georgia built, and it's what this front is being asked to become. Plus the running back matchup that might be the best of the season, and Katz's final score. 🦈 EVERYDAYER CLUB — ad-free, plus members-only Discord. 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🌐 THE OLE MISS HUB — https://olemisshub.com 💬 THE LOOM PRIVATE DISCORD, FREE — https://discord.gg/KF3dtcQJhC 🎧 EVERY PLATFORM — https://link.chtbl.com/LOOleMiss?sid=YouTube 📻 LIVE POSTGAME 15 to 30 minutes after the final whistle. Steven Willis joined the Can't Miss Matchup segment to preview the only game between two ranked teams this weekend — and gave the scouting report on Will Echoles that nobody in the national media has. Two days to kickoff. No. 9 Ole Miss vs No. 24 Louisville at Nissan Stadium, 7:30 ET Sunday night on ABC. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 [FILL FROM CASTMAGIC AFTER RECORDING] 📌 THREE THINGS 1. Will Echoles is the name to know. He's from Houston, Mississippi, found as a low three-star by defensive line coach Randall Joyner, and he'd grown into a near five-star by the time he signed. Last season he led all Power 4 defensive tackles in quarterback pressures with 4.5 sacks — and the expectation here is 7 to 8 this year from a three-technique. 2. Why the defense is the story. The transfer portal spending at Ole Miss had been running roughly 70-30 toward offense. This year the money went to a Power 4 safety and two Power 4 corners rather than lower-ceiling depth — Edwin Joseph from Florida State, Joenel Aguero from Georgia and Shareef Denson from Florida. 3. Trinidad Chambliss has the right mental makeup for this. He isn't the type to read his own press clippings. He's still the Division II guy, which means he always has something to prove — and that's the version of him that showed up in the Superdome against Georgia. Plus why this is the best running back matchup of the entire season, and a preview of a Sunday night with nothing else on. 🦈 EVERYDAYER CLUB — Locked On Ole Miss ad-free, plus members-only Discord. 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🌐 THE OLE MISS HUB — https://olemisshub.com 💬 THE LOOM PRIVATE DISCORD, FREE — https://discord.gg/KF3dtcQJhC 🎧 EVERY PLATFORM — https://link.chtbl.com/LOOleMiss?sid=YouTube Locked On Ole Miss is part of the Locked On Podcast Network — your team, every day. #OleMiss #HottyToddy #OleMissFootball #SEC #CollegeFootball Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Everyone's been reporting that the SEC went to federal court to stop LSU from playing three former Ole Miss players. That isn't what the filing does — and understanding the difference explains everything about where this is heading. One day to kickoff. No. 9 Ole Miss vs No. 24 Louisville at Nissan Stadium, 7:30 ET Sunday night on ABC. ⚠️ Recorded Friday at noon. This story has moved daily. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 LSU statement and political reactions 06:12 Concerns about LSU situation 09:37 Previewing the Louisville game 12:35 Poncho's versatile and guaranteed shirts 16:02 Discussing football team strategy 19:48 Podcast and product sponsor segment 20:42 Explaining Ultra's nootropic pouches 26:02 Joining the Everyday Club 📌 THREE THINGS 1. The injunction is misunderstood. The SEC's federal filing isn't an attempt to keep three players off the field. It's an attempt to win back the conference's ability to impose penalties — to get around the state-level order. The SEC's own position has effectively been: play them all season, we won't stop you, the consequences land on the institution. That's a different fight than the one being reported. 2. LSU is sending two signals at once. The university president issued a statement saying LSU will follow the rules the SEC has set, which reads like an off-ramp. The governor of Louisiana went on television the same day saying they'll fight it. Meanwhile Tom Mars posted Friday morning that another state-level suit is coming, this one on breach of contract against the member institution. 3. And Tom Vanderford's keys for Sunday: total front-seven domination against the run, 200 rushing yards for Ole Miss, and a defensive end as the defensive MVP. He wants to see the tight ends used, the new receivers outside of Deuce Alexander, and Makai Frazier get 30 to 40 yards. His score: 38-17. 🦈 EVERYDAYER CLUB — ad-free, plus members-only Discord. 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🌐 THE OLE MISS HUB — https://olemisshub.com 💬 THE LOOM PRIVATE DISCORD, FREE — https://discord.gg/KF3dtcQJhC 🎧 EVERY PLATFORM — https://link.chtbl.com/LOOleMiss?sid=YouTube 📻 LIVE PREGAME Sunday, about three hours before kickoff. Kevin Rogers of Locked On Bets and Paramount Sports joins to break down all five SEC openers that matter — including a neutral's honest read on how close Ole Miss actually was last season. One day to kickoff. No. 9 Ole Miss vs No. 24 Louisville at Nissan Stadium, 7:30 ET Sunday night on ABC — the only ranked-versus-ranked game on the Week 1 schedule. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 Auburn's recent performance and challenges 04:50 Alabama's Quarterback Transition 07:02 Alabama's struggling running game 10:33 Poncho's Natty Back Guarantee and Offer 14:53 Clemson's quarterback struggles 18:41 Discussing Ultra Pouches sponsorship 19:53 Introducing Ultra Focus Pouches 25:05 Promoting free betting selections 26:42 Promoting Locked On channels 📌 THREE THINGS 1. The outside view on Ole Miss. Kevin lives in South Florida, isn't a Miami fan, and watched the semifinal. His read: Ole Miss was right there, they stopped Carson Beck, and with everything that happened around Lane Kiffin's exit before the playoff, they were a stop away from playing for a national championship. His conclusion is that Ole Miss deserves to be in the national conversation alongside Georgia and Texas. 2. The Brohm pattern, laid out with receipts. He is always dangerous as an underdog — Notre Dame as a home dog in 2023, at Clemson as a 10.5-point dog in 2024, at Miami as a 13.5-point dog last season. But Louisville opened against Austin Peay and Eastern Kentucky the last two years, so this is a genuine test out of the gate for a team replacing its quarterback, its top receiver and its three leading tacklers. 3. Why the Golding situation is different this time. Last season he was thrown into the playoff mid-stream when Kiffin left. This time he has had a full offseason, and Ole Miss returns its quarterback while Louisville does not. Plus the full SEC opening slate: Auburn and Baylor in Atlanta, Alabama and East Carolina, LSU hosting Clemson, and Mississippi State against ULM. ⚠️ Kevin's selections are his own and belong to Locked On Bets and Paramount Sports. Steven Willis joined Ruben Diaz and Richard Denson on The 24th Floor to preview Ole Miss and Louisville — and shared something that hasn't been on Locked On Ole Miss yet. Two days to kickoff. No. 9 Ole Miss vs No. 24 Louisville at Nissan Stadium, Sunday night on ABC — the only ranked-versus-ranked game on the entire Week 1 schedule. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 [FILL FROM CASTMAGIC AFTER RECORDING] 📌 THREE THINGS 1. The 306-carry question is answered. John David Baker was asked whether Kewan Lacy runs it that many times again and said no — they do not want that and they are not going to do it. Lacy may still see 300 touches, but not 300 carries between the tackles. Expect jet sweeps, slot alignments, bubble screens, and Makai Frazier in the backfield so Ole Miss can show two-back personnel that doesn't play like it. 2. Last season's offense was a retrofit. Ole Miss was running an offense built for Austin Simmons with Trinidad Chambliss operating it. This is the first year the offense has been built for Chambliss from scratch — and he's added roughly 15 pounds, most of it in his lower body. The caution: Baker likes to run his quarterback. He was co-offensive coordinator here when Matt Corral carried it 25 times in a single game against Tennessee in 2021. 3. Why the defensive line is the clearest advantage, and why the secondary is no longer the soft spot it was. Louisville lost ten scholarship offensive linemen. And Ole Miss rebuilt its back end with Power 4 starters rather than value shopping — Edwin Joseph from Florida State, Shareef Denson from Florida, Joenel Aguero from Georgia. Plus Pete Golding's endorsement of Isaac Brown, why this might be the best running back matchup of the entire season, and a final score prediction. 🎙️ Thanks to The 24th Floor with Ruben Diaz and Richard Denson. 🦈 EVERYDAYER CLUB — Locked On Ole Miss ad-free, plus members-only Discord. 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🌐 THE OLE MISS HUB — https://olemisshub.com 💬 THE LOOM PRIVATE DISCORD, FREE — https://discord.gg/KF3dtcQJhC 🎧 EVERY PLATFORM — https://link.chtbl.com/LOOleMiss?sid=YouTube Locked On Ole Miss is part of the Locked On Podcast Network — your team, every day. #OleMiss #HottyToddy #OleMissFootball #SEC #CollegeFootball Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The season is finally here. Steven Willis lays out three reasons Ole Miss beats Louisville on Sunday — and says Jeff Brohm's name in every one of them, because Brohm has built a career on beating teams that were better on paper. Two days to kickoff. No. 9 Ole Miss vs No. 24 Louisville at Nissan Stadium, Sunday night on ABC — the only ranked-versus-ranked game on the entire Week 1 schedule. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 Why Ole Miss will win 03:19 Louisville's offensive line challenges 07:30 Jeff Brohm's game strategy analysis 12:35 Poncho's Natty Back Guarantee 15:58 Ke'Juan Brown's performance analysis 18:17 Discussing key college football players 21:20 Partnership with neuroscientists for Ultra 25:09 Predicting Ole Miss vs. Louisville game 📌 THREE THINGS 1. Why Ole Miss wins. The stars go to work against a first-time defensive play caller: Trinidad Chambliss led the entire FBS at 8.85 yards per attempt with 3,937 yards, 22 touchdowns and 173 consecutive passes without an interception, and Kewan Lacy went 306 carries for 1,567 yards and 24 scores as the first Doak Walker finalist in program history. Mark Ivey calls a defense in a real game for the first time in his career on Sunday. 2. The biggest mismatch on the field. Louisville lost ten scholarship offensive linemen this offseason — the most of any position group on the roster — and returns one starter in Lance Robinson, with five transfers signed and a position coach who has had that room since February. Dalton Pence of Locked On Louisville said on this show that if Anwar O'Neal were healthy at left tackle and Robinson were at center, he probably would have picked the Cardinals. 3. Keys, players and a number. Tackling Isaac Brown and his 8.8 yards per carry in the first game of the season is the hardest single ask of the day. Johntay Cook and Caleb Odom have to become factors with all four leading receivers gone. And the final score prediction, on the record: Ole Miss 28, Louisville 20. Plus what Bill Flowers and Dalton Pence predicted, why the Louisville host is picking Ole Miss anyway, and the FanDuel line that opened at 7 and moved toward Louisville. 🎙️ Todd Wade joins the show later today. Todd Wade — Ole Miss legend and NFL veteran — says the thing nobody's saying about Louisville's rebuilt offensive line: the cost isn't just protection. It's leadership. Two days to kickoff. No. 9 Ole Miss vs No. 24 Louisville at Nissan Stadium, 7:30 ET Sunday night on ABC — the only ranked-versus-ranked game on the Week 1 schedule. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 Challenges with Offensive Line Changes 03:51 Importance of team leadership roles 08:21 Discussing game strategy and rankings 11:44 Poncho's versatile Ole Miss shirts 15:43 Improving the running game 17:22 Potential in the running game 22:00 First game expectations and predictions 23:36 Looking forward to the new season 📌 THREE THINGS 1. People assume the quarterback leads a football team. Wade's experience says everyone looks to the big guys — and if the offensive line is complacent, confused, or not making its calls out loud, the quarterback doesn't feel the comfort he had a year ago. Louisville is starting a quarterback making his first career start behind a line that lost ten scholarship players. Wade has lived the smaller version of this himself, graduating alongside Tutan Reyes and watching Ole Miss shuffle guards out to tackle. 2. His critique of Ole Miss is specific and it isn't flattery. The pass protection was good all of last season. The push wasn't. They were playing too high. What he wants Sunday is a four-yard rush average and moving chains — not explosives — because that takes the pressure off Trinidad Chambliss and changes what defenses can do the rest of the way. 3. Why he isn't panicked about right tackle. He expects Tommy Kinsler to settle in, and points out that Patrick Kutas next to him matters more than people realize — the guard makes a lot of the calls alongside the center, and having an experienced SEC veteran there gives a new tackle confidence. If it were a new right guard AND a new right tackle, that would worry him. Plus his read on Isaac Brown in space, why the first two drives tell you everything, and a final score. 🦈 EVERYDAYER CLUB — Locked On Ole Miss ad-free, plus members-only Discord. 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🌐 THE OLE MISS HUB — https://olemisshub.com 💬 THE LOOM PRIVATE DISCORD, FREE — https://discord.gg/KF3dtcQJhC 🎧 EVERY PLATFORM — https://link.chtbl.com/LOOleMiss?sid=YouTube 🎙️ Locked On Bets has this game Saturday morning. Steven Willis joined Locked On SEC to preview the only game between two ranked teams this weekend — and named the right tackle nobody in that press room asked about. Two days to kickoff. No. 9 Ole Miss vs No. 24 Louisville at Nissan Stadium, Sunday night on ABC. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 [FILL FROM CASTMAGIC AFTER RECORDING] 📌 THREE THINGS 1. The right tackle. Tommy Kinsler is likely to take the first rep, with a real caveat attached — he's around 350 pounds and Ole Miss plays fast, so Carius Curne needs to be ready and a platoon is live. Terez Davis locked down left tackle in the spring, and the staff has been effusive about him. He's the son of Ricky Davis, who had roughly a decade in the NBA. 2. The honest question about the defense. Everything out of Oxford says this is the best linebacker room Pete Golding has had, with Keaton Thomas possibly wearing the green dot and Luke Fiorelli in the role TJ Dottery played a year ago. Golding has said Thomas might be the best linebacker he's ever coached — which is either a real signal or a coach being hyperbolic, and we find out Sunday. 3. Three ways Louisville wins. The edges against two brand-new tackles. Isaac Brown's phone-booth quickness in a first game where nobody has tackled live in weeks. And the one people are missing — Lincoln Kienholz's legs. He ran for 1,400 yards as a high school senior in South Dakota, and containing a dual-threat quarterback has historically been the hardest thing for a Golding defense. Plus why Johntay Cook could be this offense's Elijah Moore, why the crowd will be closer to 50-50 than people assume, and a final score. 🎙️ Thanks to Locked On SEC. Dalton Pence of Locked On Louisville came on to tell Steven Willis that this week's central take doesn't hold up — and then named the matchup that flipped his own prediction. Three days to Louisville. No. 9 vs No. 24 in Nashville, Sunday night on ABC, the only ranked-versus-ranked game on the Week 1 schedule. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 Podcast crossover introduction 03:17 Louisville's performance in big games 06:58 Concerns about Ke'Juan Lacy's workload 11:13 Poncho's game day collection 14:20 Ke'Juan Brown's role in the game 18:19 Focus on defensive strategy 19:59 College Football Pick 'Em overview 24:00 Evaluating Louisville's QB Strategy 27:42 Post-game live recap 📌 THREE THINGS 1. The disagreement. Ole Miss has spent the week arguing that Brohm's own admission — inexperienced interior defensive line, strength on the outside — points at the soft spot. Dalton's answer is that Brohm never reveals anything in a press conference, and that his best interior fronts have been built from unknown players Mark Ivey developed. Call it unknown, not weakness. We're both reading the comments on this one. 2. The tell. Dalton picked Ole Miss 35-31 — and said that if Anwar O'Neal were healthy at left tackle and Lance Robinson were at center, he'd probably have taken the Cardinals. The Louisville host says the offensive line is the deciding matchup. 3. The names. Dalton's pick for the Cardinal nobody in Oxford has heard of is Keyjuan Brown, the 1B back who looked like one of the best in the conference when Isaac Brown was hurt. On defense, Cohen Entringer — the Iowa transfer who captained that defense and started all 13 games — steps in at strong safety. Plus: why John David Baker operating inside the hash marks changes what Ole Miss does with its slot and tight ends, and both hosts putting a score on the record. 🦈 EVERYDAYER CLUB — Locked On Ole Miss ad-free, plus members-only Discord. 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🌐 THE OLE MISS HUB — https://olemisshub.com 💬 THE LOOM PRIVATE DISCORD, FREE — https://discord.gg/KF3dtcQJhC 🎧 EVERY PLATFORM — https://link.chtbl.com/LOOleMiss?sid=YouTube 🔴 Follow Dalton Pence — @DPence_ on X, and subscribe to Locked On Louisville wherever you get podcasts. Spencer McLaughlin has Ole Miss on upset alert. Steven Willis went on Locked On College Football to argue about it — and by the end, both of them had landed on the exact same final score without knowing it. Four days to Louisville. No. 9 vs No. 24, Sunday night on ABC, the only ranked-versus-ranked game on the Week 1 schedule. 📌 THREE THINGS 1. The Brohm numbers that explain the fear: 10 wins, 9 wins and 9 wins in three years at Louisville — while Purdue, the program he left, has gone 4, 1 and 2 since. Spencer's read is that Brohm is as good a quarterback developer as anyone in the sport outside Lincoln Riley. 2. Both keys, laid out. For Ole Miss: get pressure on Lincoln Kienholz in his first career start, however you have to do it. Nobody who hasn't started a game is ready for constant pressure. For Louisville: run the football, 170 to 200 yards, and keep Trinidad Chambliss and Kewan Lacy on the sideline. 3. And the version of that Ole Miss fans already know — it's the Kentucky playbook. Methodical, three and four yards at a time, clock running. Kentucky held the ball for 39 minutes in the 2024 game. Louisville also needs two takeaways and something on special teams. Plus: why the rebuilt Ole Miss secondary might be a bigger edge than people think, what the Sugar Bowl tape actually showed about the offensive line, and the crowd split in Nashville. 🦈 EVERYDAYER CLUB — Locked On Ole Miss ad-free, plus members-only Discord. 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🌐 THE OLE MISS HUB — https://olemisshub.com 💬 THE LOOM PRIVATE DISCORD, FREE — https://discord.gg/KF3dtcQJhC 🎧 EVERY PLATFORM — https://link.chtbl.com/LOOleMiss?sid=YouTube 🎙️ Go subscribe to Locked On College Football with Spencer McLaughlin — daily coverage of the entire sport. Bill Flowers has Ole Miss winning 48-21 — and he'll tell you exactly why the offense could put up historic numbers this season. Four days to Louisville. No. 9 vs No. 24, Sunday night on ABC, the only ranked-versus-ranked game on the Week 1 schedule. Steven Willis brings in the former Ole Miss receiver for the weekly legend segment: why Louisville is the perfect Week 1 opponent, why he pushed back on this show's own take about the mismatch up front, the coaching failure he still blames for 2004, and the play he called himself to win a game against South Carolina. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 Previewing the Louisville matchup 03:40 Analyzing Ole Miss vs Louisville matchup 07:12 Challenges for inexperienced quarterbacks 11:36 Purchasing team shirts with perks 14:49 Comparing football players' skills 17:27 Defensive strategy and key players 22:44 Ole Miss offensive strategy analysis 24:34 Defending against the run game 26:52 End video with engagement prompts 📌 THREE THINGS 1. He agrees Louisville's rebuilt offensive line is a problem — but only half the problem. Cohesiveness matters most in pass protection, far less in run blocking, so if he's Louisville he establishes Isaac Brown early, shortens the game and keeps Trinidad Chambliss on the sideline. His words: that's what Miami did to Ole Miss. 2. On the 2003 and 2004 quarterback situation, he doesn't blame Michael Spurlock. He blames the staff for never getting a backup real reps behind Eli Manning. "That's a coaching error." It's the second time in three days a legend on this show has raised what happens if the starter goes down. 3. He thinks every defense this season has to choose how it wants to lose — stack the box against Kewan Lacy and give up the middle of the field, or bail and get run on. Safeties can't play both. That's how an offense puts up historic numbers without running an air raid. Plus: what he actually thinks of Pete Golding, why he wants the tight ends eating the middle of the field, and the story of telling a coach to put him in the game to win it or lose it. 🦈 EVERYDAYER CLUB — Locked On Ole Miss ad-free, plus members-only Discord. 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🌐 THE OLE MISS HUB — https://olemisshub.com 💬 THE LOOM PRIVATE DISCORD, FREE — https://discord.gg/KF3dtcQJhC 🎧 EVERY PLATFORM — https://link.chtbl.com/LOOleMiss?sid=YouTube 💼 INDEED — $75 sponsored job credit at https://indeed.com/podcast . Every preview of Ole Miss and Louisville this week has been about Clev Lubin and AJ Green. That's the wrong line. Louisville lost ten scholarship offensive linemen this offseason — the most of any position group on the roster — and returns one starter. Jeff Brohm also said out loud on Monday that his interior defensive line is inexperienced and his strength is on the outside. Both of Louisville's soft spots are interior, and interior is exactly where Ole Miss is best. Four days to Louisville. Seventeen to LSU. Steven Willis puts four press conferences next to each other: Pete Golding and Jeff Brohm on Monday, Trinidad Chambliss and Kewan Lacy on Tuesday. Both head coaches admitted the same weakness about their own defenses — and solved it opposite ways. Then a national panel paid Ole Miss the biggest compliment of the week, and it may be the most dangerous thing anybody has said about this team. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 Concerns about Louisville's defense 05:53 Ole Miss game strategy analysis 09:15 Ole Miss vs. Louisville matchup analysis 12:17 Ole Miss fan gear details 13:16 Promoting Poncho Outdoors shirts 19:23 Golden keeps defensive play calling 20:48 Weekly free football picks competition 25:53 Ole Miss advantage discussion 26:42 Closing and call to action 📌 THREE THINGS 1. Louisville's offensive line: ten scholarship players lost, one returning starter in Lance Robinson, five transfers signed just to have bodies who've played, projected starter Anwar O'Neal hurt in the spring, and a new position coach since February. Portal offensive lines are a hit-and-miss proposition, and this one meets an elite defensive front in Week 1. 2. Brohm handed his defensive play-calling to first-timer Mark Ivey and volunteered that communication has hurt Louisville in years past. Golding kept the headset himself — something he picked up from Brent Venables — then admitted his own mock game gave up explosive plays to communication busts. Three new voices on three headsets in one football game. 3. Kewan Lacy, asked what he worked on this offseason, led with pass protection — not the 1,567 yards or the 24 touchdowns. The best pass-blocking back in America spent his summer getting better at pass blocking, four days before facing two edge rushers with 13.5 tackles for loss between them. 🦈 EVERYDAYER CLUB — Locked On Ole Miss ad-free, plus members-only Discord. 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🌐 EVERYTHING ELSE — https://olemisshub.com 🎧 EVERY PLATFORM — https://link.chtbl.com/LOOleMiss?sid=YouTube 💼 INDEED — When you need the right hire, Indeed Sponsored Jobs connects you with candidates who match your specific needs. 🔴 LIVE [DAY] at 8:00 PM ET / 7:00 CT — Rebel Squad, with Daylan Flowers and Tyler Komis. Four days until No. 9 Ole Miss plays No. 24 Louisville at Nissan Stadium — the only ranked-versus-ranked game on the entire Week 1 schedule, standalone on ABC Sunday night. Two people who have been in the building all month, live, taking your questions. WHAT WE'RE GETTING INTO The job nobody asked about. Right tackle is the only unsettled spot on this roster. Pete Golding publicly put a timeline on it — decide one week, announce the next. Then he took 23 minutes of questions from nine reporters in his game-week press conference and it never came up. Flowers and Komis were in that room, and we're asking them what happened. The line nobody is talking about. Everyone's preview is about Clev Lubin and AJ Green — and they're real, with 13.5 tackles for loss between them and 64 quarterback pressures from Lubin alone last season. But Jeff Brohm said out loud on Monday that the middle of his defensive line is inexperienced, and nobody checked his other line. Louisville lost ten scholarship offensive linemen this offseason, the most of any position group on the roster, and returns one starter. Three new voices on three headsets. Brohm handed his defensive play-calling to a first-timer and volunteered that communication has hurt Louisville in years past. Golding kept the headset himself — a habit he picked up from Brent Venables — then admitted his own mock game gave up explosive plays to communication busts. And John David Baker is calling the Ole Miss offense for the first time. The compliment that might be a trap. A national panel said Ole Miss doesn't have to play its best game to win this. Their actual worry wasn't Louisville. It was Ole Miss beating itself — penalties, procedure, and a roster that knows LSU is 17 days away. And whatever you bring. Host Andy Dirksen spotlights how Pete Golding has retooled the roster, aiming for SEC supremacy and a return to playoff glory. Key discussions include the impact of losing both starting tackles to the NFL, the influx of Power 4 transfers in the secondary, and the high-stakes showdown against LSU that has tickets soaring. Special teams ace and standout running back add further depth to the Rebels’ arsenal, while the potential for an undefeated 12-0 season comes into focus. Fifteen SEC schools — every member except LSU — spent the last 48 hours discussing expulsion, membership probation, refusing to take the field against LSU, and a federal lawsuit against their own conference-mate. That's Ross Dellenger's reporting. Ole Miss is one of the fifteen. Ole Miss also hosts LSU in Oxford in eighteen days. Louisville in five days. LSU in eighteen. Steven Willis breaks down what the SEC can actually do — the 48-page bylaws never use the word "expulsion," but Section 4.1.2 lets the presidents impose any other penalty they consider appropriate — plus the 72-hour clock nobody is talking about, and an on-air correction about which conference already sued its own member in federal court. Then: Pete Golding kept the defensive headset in his first opener as a head coach and told on his own defense doing it. And Jeff Brohm took the SEC's side unprompted, then named three places Louisville isn't ready. 📌 THREE THINGS 1. Expulsion, probation, refusal to play, federal suit — all four are on the table, and the bylaw language is wide open. The injunction hearing is Thursday in Baton Rouge. LSU plays Clemson Friday. An April bylaw bars roster additions after a team's first game. 2. Pete Golding is still calling the defense himself as a first-year head coach — and said Saturday's mock game gave up explosive plays to communication busts. "You can't do this and win versus top 25 teams." 3. Jeff Brohm on pros returning to college: "No, I'm not in agreement with that. I don't know if anyone is." He wants federal guidelines — and he has a player on his own roster he can't use yet. 🦈 EVERYDAYER CLUB — Locked On Ole Miss ad-free, plus members-only Discord. 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🌐 EVERYTHING ELSE — https://olemisshub.com Episode Timestamps 00:00 SEC Football Coaching Strategies 05:22 SEC bylaws and penalties 08:09 SEC hearing and future games discussion 10:46 Game day shopping at Pant Store 16:55 Golden's first game as head coach 19:25 Promoting comfy team shirts 24:05 Discussing Ole Miss vs. Louisville matchup 24:43 Promoting channel subscriptions and listens Ole Miss, Ole Miss Rebels, LSU, LSU Tigers, SEC drama, SEC news, college football, Pete Golding, Lane Kiffin, Jaheim Otis, Mekhi Burrell, Will Echols, Antonio Kite, Jalen Crawford, Jeff Brohm, Louisville football, SEC controversy, college football news, Ole Miss vs LSU, Ole Miss vs Louisville, SEC rumors, NCAA eligibility, SEC lawsuit, college football preview Everydayer Club If you never miss an episode, it’s time to make it official. John Fourcade says a man who signs a professional contract is done — no do-overs, no coming back. Then he tells the story of the 1987 strike season, when Jim Finks caught him at the airport on his way to sign with the Raiders and turned him around, and he crossed the picket line to play for the Saints. Six days to Louisville. Steven Willis brings in the former Ole Miss quarterback for the weekly legend segment: why Nashville plays as a home game, why he'd cut Trinidad Chambliss's designed carries roughly in half, the question nobody is asking about what's behind Chambliss on the depth chart, and a Week 1 board where Ole Miss carries the smallest line in the SEC. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 [FILL FROM CASTMAGIC AFTER RECORDING] 📌 THREE THINGS 1. Fourcade doesn't buy that the offense changes much — he points out that in his day every quarterback on the roster ran the same offense, and expects the staff to keep what worked. His caution: don't build designed runs around Chambliss. He'd take the carries from 10-12 down to 6-8, and he brings up Robert Griffin III at Baylor as the reason. 2. The question he asks that nobody else has: everyone knew what was behind Austin Simmons. Nobody knows what's behind Trinidad Chambliss. 3. On Nashville: "It's a lot more SEC than the big ACC." He believes Ole Miss is the better football team and doesn't see Louisville winning — while allowing they can beat anybody on a given day. Tom Mars — the attorney who beat the NCAA for Trinidad Chambliss — laid out why he believes the conferences beat the players in court, and it explains exactly why the SEC wrote the rule it wrote. Plus: Jeff Brohm's giant-killer résumé, and why Ole Miss has the smallest point spread of any team in the SEC in Week 1. Louisville in six days. LSU in nineteen. Steven Willis breaks down the eligibility fight from the legal mechanics up — third-party beneficiary claims, why they work against the NCAA and collapse against a conference, and why a brand-new rule with no enforcement history is nearly impossible to attack. Then the man on the other sideline: a coach who has beaten a No. 2 team on the road at two different schools, and whose one weakness cannot appear in Week 1. And finally the Week 1 SEC board, where 13 of 16 games are warm-ups and the ninth-ranked team in America is laying the shortest number in the league. 📌 THREE THINGS 1. Mars's argument: nothing in a conference constitution makes a player a third-party beneficiary, so there is no contract to sue on — and a rule that has never been enforced cannot have been enforced arbitrarily. On the alter-ego theory, his words: that dog won't hunt. 2. Jeff Brohm beat No. 2 Ohio State, No. 2 Iowa and No. 5 Michigan State at Purdue, then beat No. 2 Miami on the road at Louisville — the first road win over an AP top-10 team in that program's history. He is 28-12 at Louisville with three straight nine-win seasons. 3. Ole Miss is -6.5 against Louisville with a total of 55.5. That is the smallest spread of any SEC team in Week 1 — and it opened at 7. The SEC just announced it will comply with the restraining order. That is not a retreat. That's the trap — and the SEC set it. Steven Willis is joined by Tom Vanderford, the Mayor of Corinth , for game week. IN THIS EPISODE: ⚖️ Why complying is the play. Per Ross Dellenger , the SEC is complying. The whole goal is to get this into federal court — and if they get there, they win. And complying now doesn't mean no penalties later. As soon as this clears, they can hammer them: half a season per instance, half the sport's operating budget, the conference vote, and whatever else the commissioner adds. Tom Mars put it best: the SEC's position is like parking an RV in your driveway in an HOA — you can get a TRO, maybe a local injunction, but it won't hold up in any appeals court. "The SEC has a four-aces winner." 🏈 And here's the part LSU fans should actually worry about — because it happened to us. In 2022, Kiffin did this exact thing with Auburn, and Ole Miss wasn't inoculated against it. Blown out at Arkansas. Lost to Mississippi State — the only time in his entire tenure. Run out of the Texas Bowl by Texas Tech. Go back and listen to the reaction shows from that stretch. 🚨 LSU's roster has never been through this. Ole Miss has — this group survived December, and whatever's happening now feels like kindergarten. 🏀 Plus: I'm not a fan of what Chris Beard did. Ole Miss basketball took a commitment from a player with professional experience — and when a transfer graphic has the Utah Jazz on it, my ears perk up. The same trap that's about to close on LSU could close on Ole Miss. Half a season for Beard, half the basketball budget, the vote. My rule doesn't change because it points at us: there are no do-overs. Once you go pro, you cross the event horizon. 🎯 And the best story of the offseason. How did Ole Miss keep Chambliss and Lacy? They told them to go Google Lane Kiffin. Nothing anybody offers you touches your legacy. And it worked because it's just true — Chambliss, with a long run, goes down as the greatest quarterback in Ole Miss history. Lacy, if he repeats last year, passes Deuce and Quinshon. 🛡️ Football, too: why Kewan Lacy is basically an extra offensive lineman and the best blocking back Tom's seen in years, Caleb Odom as an Evan Engram-type matchup problem, and why Ole Miss might have the hardest game in America this weekend. ⭐ THE EVERYDAY CLUB — ad-free, members-only Discord, 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🏠 THE OLE MISS HUB: olemisshub.com · 🆕 LOCKED ON OLE MISS HITS — daily short-form. No depth charts. No position-by-position walkthrough. Everybody else is doing that today and it's unwatchable. Three takes, and you can hold me to all three in January. IN THIS EPISODE: 🏈 ONE: Ole Miss is going to win a game 17-13, and it'll be the most important win of the season. For a decade this program was an offense with a tag-along defense — score 40, hope they score 39. Kiffin built an amusement park and the ride was the offense. That's over. The number that tells the whole story, via Tom Vanderford: the 2025 transfer class was ~70% offense and 30% defense. This year it's about 50/50. That's an entire offseason in one number. And here's what it bought: you're no longer buying Great Value brand transfer portal targets. You can get the name brands now. A starter from Florida State, a starter from Georgia, a starter from Florida, a starter from Auburn. That's shopping at the big boy rack. 🎯 And the reason it matters, from a man I worked for. Coach Cutcliffe used to say: you never know when the play is going to happen that determines the outcome. You have to be ready every single play. Twenty years later, look at the Fiesta Bowl — a busted coverage and a missed tackle, both touchdowns. Two plays. Golding's ideal defense doesn't blitz — it generates pressure with four or fewer and drops everybody else. And that only works if the back five can hold up completely alone. 🚨 TWO: September 19 is a trap. GameDay in the Grove, Kiffin walking back in (if he's not suspended) , $800 a ticket. But LSU is, best case, the fourth-best team Ole Miss plays this year. The season is decided at Texas — game 8, on the road, five games into conference play with no emotional lift left. And it's a homecoming: Johntay Cook started his career at Texas and is from DeSoto. Kewan Lacy is from Texas. Landon Barnes is out of Duncanville. I called Texas as a win back in July and I haven't moved off it. 🏔️ THREE: this is the best roster Ole Miss will have for three years. The rev-share cap is real. The roster limit is real. You can't do what Ole Miss did last offseason twice. Ceiling 12-0 — there isn't a bona fide loss on that schedule. Floor 9-3. And 9-3 is the version where you look back in January and realize the year got away by a possession here and a bad half there. It's not getting blown out that should scare you. It's getting close. What's the saying? It's the hope that kills you. ⭐ THE EVERYDAY CLUB — ad-free, members-only Discord, plus the newsletter and bonus content: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🏠 THE OLE MISS HUB: olemisshub.com · 🆕 LOCKED ON OLE MISS HITS — daily short-form. People keep asking how I know so much about the Trinidad Chambliss case. Here's the answer: I watched the whole trial. With my own eyes. That isn't something I heard from somebody who heard it. IN THIS EPISODE: ⚖️ What the case was actually about — and it isn't what anybody's saying. It was a medical redshirt. Chambliss got hurt at Ferris State, a Division II school. He qualified, he was going to get it, nobody disputed it at the time — four years ago. Here's where it went sideways: D-II medical-redshirt documentation standards are far less extensive than Division I's. So Ferris State, doing exactly what a D-II school is required to do, didn't keep the paperwork D-I would need. Not because anybody did anything wrong. Because they weren't required to. Then he transfers up and the NCAA applies a D-I standard to a D-II file. 🚨 And the part that should end this permanently: the NCAA admitted in open court that Chambliss EASILY cleared the bar. They conceded it. Out loud. Their position was never that he wasn't hurt or didn't qualify — only that the paperwork proving something everybody agreed on no longer existed. This wasn't a loophole. It was a filing cabinet. 📺 And if you think it was invented for a lawsuit: go find the broadcast of the 2024 Division II national championship, Ferris State vs. Valdosta State. They discussed the medical redshirt on the air — two years before this was a legal question, before anybody outside Big Rapids, Michigan knew who he was. 🧠 Then the argument itself. Everything above is checkable. And here's what comes back at me instead: he's been in college six years · rules are rules · everybody's cheating anyway · it's Ole Miss. Notice none of them is about the redshirt. Nobody has told me the D-II standard is the same as D-I. Nobody has said the NCAA didn't concede it. Nobody has gone and found the broadcast. They're not disagreeing with facts. They're having a feeling and working backward. And that feeling is real — I'm not mocking anybody for it. But a feeling is not an argument, and it doesn't become one because a lot of people share it. 🏈 Plus the fun one. The Locked On Top 100 is out — I voted in it, disclosure up front — and Ole Miss has four: Chambliss at 6, Kewan Lacy at 8, Will Echoles at 22, Suntarine Perkins at 97. Two of the top eight players in America. And 97 is too low for the Chucky Mullins winner — I'll say that even though I was in the voting pool. ⭐ THE EVERYDAY CLUB — ad-free, members-only Discord, 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🏠 THE OLE MISS HUB — everything in one place: olemisshub.com · 🆕 LOCKED ON OLE MISS HITS — daily short-form. SEC football heats up as new quarterback battles shake up the Power Five landscape. Keelon Russell (Alabama), Faizon Brandon (Tennessee), Aaron Philo (Florida), KJ Jackson (Arkansas), and Blaze Berlowitz (Vanderbilt) lead a wave of fresh starters, but which newcomer has the biggest upside? The expert panel debates ceiling vs. floor in quarterback decisions, the strategic risks behind starting true freshmen, and whether program loyalty or pure talent is driving these high-stakes choices. Playoff intrigue ramps up as the hosts question if a 9-3 SEC team deserves a playoff spot over powerhouses from softer schedules. With non-conference clashes like Oklahoma-Michigan and Texas-Ohio State on the horizon, can the SEC prove its dominance? Heisman hopefuls—including Trinidad Chambliss, Jeremiah Smith, Julian Sayin, and Dante Moore—are put under the microscope, while running backs like Jayden Baugh and potential dark horses emerge in wild off-the-wall predictions. The SEC announced what happens if you break their new rule against pro players. It's worse than anybody expected. IN THIS EPISODE: ⚖️ The penalties, one at a time — and each is worse than the last. Per Matt Norlander, CBS Sports. The head coach suspended half a season. Not the player — the coach. The school loses its voting privileges on SEC business matters — and that's a bigger deal than people realize. Say expansion comes up and the conference votes on whether Tulane gets in. You're not at the table. A fine of 50% of that sport's annual budget. Facilities money. Staff money. Half a season's operating budget, because you signed one guy. And the commissioner can add more on top — a championship ban, players ruled ineligible. They basically handed Sankey the death penalty. 🏛️ Then the part almost nobody is explaining correctly. Attorneys say the SEC is defying a court order and want the NCAA held in contempt for "cartel-like coordination." But they're not the same entity. The SEC isn't a subsidiary of the NCAA — it's its own organization with its own membership and its own rules. That's exactly why the Big Ten and the SEC could do this and get away with it. And the restraining order never mentioned the SEC once. Heitner calls it a "colorable argument" — and Tom Mars pointed out what that phrase means: something you fully believe that has almost no chance of passing. ⚡ And the answer nobody's saying loudly enough: would a conference sue its own school? It already happened this summer. The Big 12 legally challenged Texas Tech over Brendan Sorsby, in the middle of the night, and won. The precedent is three months old. 🏈 Plus the question about Trinidad Chambliss nobody's asking. Everything he's done in this league, he did as a surprise — no current film, no book, and for most of last year he was running a retrofitted Austin Simmons offense. Now every coordinator has eight months and thirteen games of tape. Including Kiffin, who coached him. 🛡️ And the number that should make you feel better about that offensive line. Will Echoles had 26 pressures — most of any Power 4 defensive tackle. Interior pressure is the one thing you can't scheme around. Everybody's asked whether Ole Miss can protect the quarterback. Nobody's asked whether Louisville can. ⭐ THE EVERYDAY CLUB — ad-free, members-only Discord, 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🆕 LOCKED ON OLE MISS HITS — 5-minute-or-less takes, daily, on its own channel. 🏠 THE OLE MISS HUB — everything in one place: olemisshub.com Locked On Ole Miss is your daily Ole Miss Rebels podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network. Seventeen of Louisville's twenty-two starters are transfers. All five offensive linemen came from somewhere else. Steven Willis joins Brian Smith of Locked On the Portal to break down the Cardinals eleven days out. IN THIS EPISODE: 📋 The roster, counted. Brian went through the OurLads depth chart and tallied it: 17 of 22 offensive and defensive starters are transfers. And the detail underneath it matters more than the number — all five offensive linemen. When you miss on high school linemen, it usually doesn't end well. Isaac Brown is on another level — maybe the fastest back in college football at roughly 7 yards a carry — but Brian's projection is that on 80% of his carries it's four yards or less, because Ole Miss out-talents them at the line of scrimmage. 🎯 The quarterback, and the one thing that decides the game. Lincoln Kienholz was a top-100 recruit out of Pierre, South Dakota who couldn't crack second team at Ohio State — and ran for about 1,400 yards as a high school senior. More athletic than he is a thrower. Jeff Brohm is a Bobby Petrino guy — go look at what a Petrino system did with Lamar Jackson at Louisville. So it's down-and-distance: get them into third-and-five or longer. Except they might run QB power on third-and-five anyway, and past their own 40 on fourth-and-one they're going for it every time. 🛡️ And the best scouting on this show all month. Brian covered Edwin Joseph at Florida State: the Seminoles were a top-five man coverage team when he arrived, then changed coordinators and went to zone — and that's when he moved off corner. Most good man corners struggle once zone gets in their head. So Joseph going back outside tells you something about how much man Ole Miss intends to play — likely Saban's MOD : man on the boundary, zone or match to the field. 🚨 Plus the diagnosis that explains this whole season. The secondary cost Ole Miss the Miami game — a missed tackle, a busted coverage, and a defense that had to rush three to protect its own back end. They couldn't do their normal stuff. If the back five is self-sufficient this year, that front can go to work. And: the SEC's Week 1 must-wins, and Keegan Croucher looking like Trevor Lawrence. 🎧 Follow Brian Smith and Locked On the Portal wherever you get podcasts. ⭐ THE EVERYDAY CLUB — ad-free, members-only Discord: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🏠 THE OLE MISS HUB: olemisshub.com · 🆕 LOCKED ON OLE MISS HITS — daily short-form. Greg Sankey wrote down exactly what he was going to do months ago — under oath, in a case that had nothing to do with LSU. And I bet he's glad he did. IN THIS EPISODE: ⚖️ The sentence nobody quotes. Sankey filed an affidavit supporting the NCAA in the Charles Bediako matter — the first player with college experience to sign an NBA contract and come back. In it he wrote that letting former pros return creates "a competitive disadvantage and fundamental unfairness" for athletes who didn't pursue a professional career. And then the second half: it's also unfair to the programs that operated inside the existing framework and therefore didn't go add a former professional athlete to their roster. It's unfair to the schools that followed the rules. That's the entire argument, on the record, before any of this touched LSU or Ole Miss. 📋 Declared, signed, or listed. The Big Ten went first — football only, and the penalty is a half-season suspension for the head coach plus a school fine. Not the player. The coach. Then the SEC went further: 16-0 , covering men's and women's basketball too , and written so you can't argue your way through the gap. NFL, any other pro football league, NBA, G-League, WNBA or affiliate. All three doors at once. 🏈 And the position Kiffin is in this morning. For a week he told that roster it wasn't good enough — not in a press conference, but by going out and doing it. Now he has to convince the same group they're good enough after all. "You just told me last week I needed to be replaced. Now you need me to run through a wall for you against Clemson?" Ole Miss has been through this exact thing — 2022, 8-1, then four straight losses. The talent was still there in November. The belief went out of the building. 🏀 And it cost us too. Corey Stephenson — an 18-point scorer who signed an Exhibit 10 with Detroit and played four Summer League games — is ineligible. And that's the correct outcome. The rule I want is the rule I want regardless of who it costs. Plus the honest counterargument from Bediako's attorney, and what's still unresolved. How bad does an idea have to be that every conference in America passes a rule against it inside 48 hours? The SEC dropped the hammer — 16-0, unanimous. Which means LSU voted for it. Steven Willis is joined live by Daylan Flowers and Tyler Komis for the Rebel Squad. IN THIS EPISODE: ⚖️ Sixteen to nothing. When this first got reported, 14 schools were locked in, one was unsure, and one was dug in — and the one dug in was LSU. By the vote it was unanimous, which tells you Greg Sankey's legal team put the information in front of them. And the rule is broader than people realize: NFL, NBA, G League, WNBA, CFL — any lettered professional league. The presidents gave Sankey unprecedented authority to enforce it: players ruled ineligible, schools fined, coaches suspended, programs barred from championships and playoffs. 🏀 And it cost Ole Miss too. Corey Stephenson , who committed to Chris Beard, signed a professional contract — he's ineligible under this rule. And that's the correct outcome. If there's a professional athlete on the Ole Miss roster, get them out. Texas signed Cole Hudson — get him out too. That's the whole point of having a rule. 🎯 The fairest read of the day came from Tyler Komis: Pete Golding would have used this rule to his advantage if he'd seen it benefiting his team. He just didn't see it. This isn't about Ole Miss being morally superior. It's that there are guardrails now, and they apply to everybody including us. 💔 And the question nobody has an answer to. Where does Dae'Quan Wright go from here? He was dressed out with Cleveland on a Saturday and committed to LSU on a Sunday. Per Football Scoop, there was recruiting from the LSU side to make it happen. A man with a sterling reputation — second-team All-SEC, stayed when Kiffin left, part of the team that beat Georgia — took a hit he didn't earn. 🏈 Plus the football. Golding named three freshmen he's impressed with and all three are defensive linemen : Jayden Curtis (the surprise of camp) , Landon Barnes (out of Duncanville — the program that produced Colin Simmons) , and Carmelo Reed. Flowers' comparison: this is Will Echoles and Kam Franklin in 2024 all over again. If this defensive line isn't tired in November and December, these are the three who bought that. And your comments, live, for the whole back half. ⭐ THE EVERYDAY CLUB — ad-free, members-only Discord, 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🏠 THE OLE MISS HUB — everything in one place: olemisshub.com · 🆕 LOCKED ON OLE MISS HITS — daily short-form. 🎧 Follow Daylan Flowers and Tyler Komis. Michael Katz asked Pete Golding whether Ole Miss had the FBI sweep the building for bugs. The first thing Golding said was "say that again" — with a smile on his face. First He Said What?!? episode of the year. Golding talked for 25 minutes to close fall camp and gave us more usable material than any availability all month. IN THIS EPISODE: 🚨 The FBI answer, parsed. Golding said he's not sure there was a hiring process. That they probably have a current player whose dad just so happens to work for the FBI and lives in town. That there was no measure of "oh my gosh, come in," from that standpoint — a phrase he used three separate times. Count the hedges. Then look at what he actually denied: a hiring process. Nobody said Ole Miss hired the FBI. Walker Jones said the FBI came through and walked the building. He denied the claim nobody made — and then handed over the mechanism himself. 🎯 Where I land, labeled as a read every time: I think a sweep happened. I don't think an official sweep happened. Probably closer to a dad who works for the Bureau walking a building than a formal engagement with a field office — and that distinction is exactly what Golding was standing on. He's not lying. He's being precise, and he wants the story smaller than it sounded. That's a coach doing his job, and I'd do the same thing 13 days out. And nothing was ever reported found — just because they searched doesn't mean it was there. 🏈 "Everybody doesn't get a my bad." Golding on where this team actually is. The scrimmages have been flashy — enough on tape where you go, that's winning football. And then: same unit, same dudes, same calls, and that's not it. Drive by drive, every drive was extended or stopped by a non-aggressive penalty or a bust. Not by getting beat. That's the most encouraging bad news you'll hear all camp. 🛡️ Plus: Edwin Joseph bumped outside to corner — "really, really impressive" — and the position names nobody outside that building has heard: Lion, Free and Ram , all interchangeable. Right tackle still open. Caleb Cunningham finally healthy. Jarkobi Hobson locking down the fourth linebacker spot. And Samari Reed won most improved — two independent sources in three days. ⭐ THE EVERYDAY CLUB — ad-free, members-only Discord, 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🆕 LOCKED ON OLE MISS HITS — daily short-form, separate channel and audio feed. 🏠 THE OLE MISS HUB — everything in one place: olemisshub.com Locked On Ole Miss is your daily Ole Miss Rebels podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network. IN THIS EPISODE: 💰 Why I don't think either one plays a snap. Tennessee has a player suspended two games right now over roughly $429 in pre-draft money he already paid back. One flight. These men were in NFL camps, represented by Drew Rosenhaus. If $429 buys a two-game suspension, a five-figure signing bonus isn't a two-game problem. That's my read — but the precedent exists, and somebody has to explain why it doesn't apply. 🧩 Eighty new players, and they're still adding. Katz's point isn't that LSU's talent is bad — it's that expecting roughly 80 newcomers to come together in one season is really hard, and that's not a knock on Kiffin, it's a knock on what the sport has become. And the question nobody over there wants asked: what happens to the guys who lose their scholarships? Compare it to Golding's position — they built this team, they like the chemistry, and absent injury they're not adding, because it isn't fair to the guys who've been in the room since January. 🕵️ Katz was ten feet away for the FBI answer. His read: Golding was adamant they didn't call the FBI in — but "he didn't say it didn't completely happen," and he "softened the blow" by offering that somebody's parent in town works for the Bureau. He also confirmed the moment: Pete initially went "what are you talking about," then "oh — okay, this is what we're talking about." Two people, watching independently, landed in the same place. And nothing was ever reported found. 🏈 Plus the football detail almost nobody picked up: you can't talk about the Ole Miss receiver room without the tight ends. If they're in 12 personnel, the No. 2 receiver matters more than the No. 3. Caleb Cunningham is back to 100% and competing for the fourth spot, Darrell Gill Jr.'s issue is consistency, and the pass rush replacing Princewill Umanmielen is a group effort by design — if you can rush three and get there, why rush five? 🎧 Follow Michael Katz at the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal. ⭐ THE EVERYDAY CLUB — ad-free, members-only Discord: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🏠 THE OLE MISS HUB: olemisshub.com · 🆕 LOCKED ON OLE MISS HITS — daily short-form. College GameDay is coming to Oxford on September 19, exactly like we said three months ago. A lot of you have been waiting nine months to say something — and there's a right way to do it. IN THIS EPISODE: 🏈 The right version and the wrong version. That set on the Grove is the biggest platform this fanbase gets all year, and the currency has always been the signs, because the good ones travel — screenshotted and on every timeline in the sport by nine in the morning. Be clever, be funny, be specific, make the point in eight words. The best GameDay signs in history were never the angriest ones. They were the smartest ones. And the line: booing a take is fair, booing a network is fair, anything aimed at a person standing in front of you steps on your own point. You're not trying to win an argument with a television crew. You're trying to announce your side of the story to the rest of the country. 📉 And here's what nobody talks about from last November. While the coaching story ran every segment, every day, for weeks: Trinidad Chambliss wasn't promoted for the Heisman. Kewan Lacy wasn't promoted for the Doak Walker. Lucas Carneiro wasn't promoted for the Lou Groza. Nothing behind any of them. They finished very high anyway — and at least one likely could have won with any promotion at all. That team then beat Tulane, beat Georgia, and came 18 seconds from the national title game. 🛡️ Edwin Joseph is playing cornerback — and everybody's about to report it wrong. He came out of high school at corner, played corner as a Florida State freshman, moved to nickel, and only moved to safety when the scheme changed. His words: he's going back to his old roots. It's not an experiment. It's a homecoming. The case that he can start at all five DB spots — and every one is something he's actually played. Plus the mechanism behind Golding's compliment: Joseph played receiver, so he reads route combinations from the other side. 📊 And Week 0 lines are out. Not picks — the market as information. Florida State -30.5 is the biggest number on the board and tells you nothing. Dan Mullen's UNLV hosts Memphis with a 57.5 total, the highest number on the slate. And San Jose State at USC has no money line posted at all. 🆕 THE LOCKED ON OLE MISS HITS CHANNEL IS LIVE — 5-minute-or-less Ole Miss takes, every day. ⭐ THE EVERYDAY CLUB — ad-free, members-only Discord, 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🏠 THE OLE MISS HUB — everything Locked On in one place: olemisshub.com 💬 FREE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/KF3dtcQJhC Locked On Ole Miss is your daily Ole Miss Rebels podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network. I've spent two shows this week building on what Pete Golding said about his defense. Today I want to ask the uncomfortable question about it. Steven Willis is joined by Tom Vanderford, the Mayor of Corinth , for the last questions of fall camp. IN THIS EPISODE: 🤔 How couched is Pete Golding? He said Edwin Joseph reminds him of somebody he coached before and wouldn't say the name — and he was at Alabama, so everybody had fun with that Google search. He said Keaton Thomas is better than some of the linebackers he had there. If both are true, this defense is going to be amazing. But does he mean it, or is he in a position where he might be overexaggerating? I'm not saying he's lying — a head coach in August has every incentive to talk up his roster, and that's the job. But there's a difference between precise and generous, and I don't know yet which one he is. Tom's answer is the fair one: the truth gets told in the next few months, and what the transfers actually did at their old schools isn't a quote — it's film. 💰 70/30, and what it bought. Tom's heard the 2025 transfer class was roughly 70% offense, 30% defense — and this year it's about half and half. That's the cleanest explanation of the whole offseason. Ole Miss shopped the bargain bin at defensive back and Miami found the ceiling in the semifinal. Now it's Edwin Joseph (Florida State), Joenel Aguero (Georgia), Jay Crawford (Auburn), Sharif Denson (Florida). Ole Miss could always get these guys. They just weren't paying for them. 🛡️ And Joseph has been playing cornerback. He said so at his press conference Friday — and it tells you exactly where this is going. If your safeties can cover like corners, you don't have to protect them, and you can turn the front seven loose. 🧱 Plus the right tackle answer. Tom's hearing Kinsler has moved forward, with Curne still in it — the light bulb may not have come on, but it's starting to flicker. And nobody's talking about Troy Everett, who played center at Oklahoma... where they just lost their center in practice. Also: why the drop-off on this roster is after 50 instead of after 22, and what the tight end room actually looks like. 🚨 THE EVERYDAY CLUB IS NOW ONE TIER — $8/MONTH, EVERYBODY GETS EVERYTHING: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🏠 THE OLE MISS HUB — every Locked On video, articles, the Discord and the Everyday Club in one place: olemisshub.com 💬 FREE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/KF3dtcQJhC Locked On Ole Miss is your daily Ole Miss Rebels podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network. Chase Daniel was making the case for Trinidad Chambliss and a national title. Roman Harper interrupted him: "Ole Miss isn't winning a title. It's Ole Miss." That's the argument. Not the roster. The logo. Steven Willis is joined by Bossman of Biscuits and SEC for the view of Ole Miss from outside Oxford. IN THIS EPISODE: 😤 Brand bias, and the receipt for it. Ole Miss has the best quarterback in the country, the best running back in the country and the best kicker in the country. They beat Georgia in the Playoff last season with most of these same players. They're ranked 9th. And when I said on the SEC Squad that Ole Miss could win a national championship, that room looked at me like I had four heads. Bossman remembered the same SEC Network segment — and says media outside Oxford is overlooking this team, with the framing basically being Lane's gone, so it's back to the old Ole Miss. It isn't just us: Vanderbilt went 10-2 last year with two road losses to top-10 teams and missed the Playoff entirely. 🔫 "The monkey's got the gun." Bossman's line, and it's the best framing of Pete Golding anybody has given. Under Kiffin, Ole Miss couldn't spend on defense — that secondary was the bargain bin, and Miami took advantage of it in the semifinal. But Golding is the man who elevated those players into a unit that reached the cusp of a national title. Now he has the money, the control and a full year: Edwin Joseph (Florida State), Jay Crawford (Auburn), Sharif Denson (Florida), Joenel Aguero (Georgia) — four Power 4 starters in one secondary. And Bryan Brown, asked this week whether this defense can match the 2024 unit: they have work to do, but the potential is there — and they're definitely deeper. 📺 GameDay is coming to Oxford for LSU. Exactly what that game needed. And Bossman's read: Ole Miss fans may not be thrilled to see that crew, given how ESPN handled the Kiffin situation. ⚖️ And Greg Sankey drew the line. Per Bossman, the commissioner told schools professional athletes will not be allowed to play in the SEC — and sent something to LSU about a pro basketball player their coach was pursuing. Somebody finally stood up. Plus Bossman's Louisville prediction, his SEC title game picks, and the two teams he thinks jump up and get somebody this year. 🚨 THE EVERYDAY CLUB IS NOW ONE TIER — $8/MONTH, EVERYBODY GETS EVERYTHING: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🏠 THE OLE MISS HUB — every Locked On video, articles, the Discord and the Everyday Club in one place: olemisshub.com 💬 FREE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/KF3dtcQJhC 🎧 Follow Bossman at Biscuits and SEC — plus their new show, Extra Biscuits, and Biscuits and SEC Live on Wednesdays. Pete Golding called Keaton Thomas the best linebacker he can remember coaching. Golding was the defensive coordinator at Alabama. Read that sentence twice. Steven Willis joins Jay Smith of Locked On Sooners for a Locked On College Crossover ahead of Ole Miss–Oklahoma in Norman. IN THIS EPISODE: 🛡️ "An eraser." That's Golding's word for Thomas — a second-level player who makes mistakes disappear. Ole Miss hasn't had one in years; Chris Paul in 2024 is the last comparison. And Thomas is now five separate sources in ten days : Pick Six, Brett Ciancia, Harry Harrison out of the press box, Bryan Brown calling him a bell cow, and now the head coach. Plus the rumor inside the building: they think this defense can be 2024-level elite — the year Ole Miss led the nation in rush defense at 85.1 yards a game. 📋 Six of ten came back. Every national show ran the story about who followed Kiffin to Baton Rouge. Nobody ran this number: Ole Miss returned six of its ten assistants, the entire defensive staff, and both the offensive line coach and the quarterbacks coach — the two most important strategic pieces on offense that aren't a coordinator. And John David Baker is more Jeff Lebby than Charlie Weis Jr. , was here from 2021-23 before Weis arrived, and took East Carolina from statistically the worst offense in college football to a top-15 unit. He's also the reason Jaxson Dart came to Ole Miss — and without those three years, there's probably no Trinidad Chambliss here at all. ♟️ The Troy Everett chess match. A former Oklahoma center is on this roster. Ole Miss goes to Norman in November. And there's genuine respect for the Venables defense all over that building. Last year Kiffin beat Oklahoma by inverting his entire offense in the rain — slowing down, waiting for the clock to stop, specifically to get the headset off. That won't work twice. So what's next? 🤝 And the honest part. Jay Smith picked Oklahoma. Ole Miss is 3-0 in this series against one of the proudest programs in the sport, and eventually the law of averages catches you. Plus: it apparently rains every single time Ole Miss goes to Norman. Also: why Suntarine Perkins gets overlooked, what his nickname actually is, and the Chucky Mullins Award. 🚨 THE EVERYDAY CLUB IS NOW ONE TIER — $8/MONTH, EVERYBODY GETS EVERYTHING: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🏠 THE OLE MISS HUB — every Locked On video, articles, the Discord and the Everyday Club in one place: olemisshub.com 💬 FREE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/KF3dtcQJhC 🎧 Follow Jay Smith at Locked On Sooners. Two of these guys are in an NFL training camp right now — and they just went to court to get themselves a college backup plan. IN THIS EPISODE: 🚨 What actually happened. Thirty-three athletes sued the NCAA in a Louisiana state court and were granted a temporary restraining order the same day. Three are former Ole Miss starters: Dae'Quan Wright (under contract, Cleveland), Zxavian Harris (waived by New Orleans), and Wydett Williams Jr. (under contract, Arizona). Two of those men are currently employed by NFL teams. That's not a transfer. That's not an eligibility appeal. That's a hedge. (Caveat: a restraining order is temporary, and an NFL club would have to release them first.) 💰 Why somebody will make the call. Lose and you can lose your job. Win and you get celebrated. That gap is monstrous, and there's too much money on the table. But sign one of these transfers this close to the season and you're telling your own building you don't believe in the roster you built — and telling the kid who's been there three years and just won that job that it was never actually his. ⚖️ The part that matters most: a federal judge already drew this line. Judge Charlotte Sweeney's nationwide injunction is why Judd Utermark and Will Furniss are back on this roster. But Sweeney clarified her own order and specifically excluded athletes who signed professional contracts — because that's how it's always worked. When you leave early, they call it foregoing your senior year. Which is exactly why these NFL guys had to find a different courtroom in Louisiana. 🏈 And why there's no phone call to make in Oxford. Wright, Harris and Williams were real players — 39 catches and 635 yards, 15 starts and 9 TFL, 73 tackles and 3 interceptions. And Ole Miss already replaced every one of them. Plus why Chambliss was the last rightful lawsuit in this sport, the Texas Tech video, and the one thing this staff has done all August that suddenly makes a lot more sense. 🚨 THE EVERYDAY CLUB IS NOW ONE TIER — $8/MONTH, EVERYBODY GETS EVERYTHING. Michael Borkey asked Pete Golding a question I've never heard anybody ask a coach — and Golding gave a name. Which is unheard of in modern college athletics. IN THIS EPISODE: 🎯 "Is there a player you HAVEN'T been asked about that we should be asking about?" Golding said yes, a couple of guys are going to be elite — and then named Edwin Joseph. As good as any defensive back he's been around in a long time. Versatility, very quick twitch, a knack for the football. And then he said Joseph reminds him of somebody he's coached before — and wouldn't say the name. Golding was Alabama's defensive coordinator. I'm not putting a name in his mouth he didn't say himself. 📌 Four months, and nobody else. We've had Joseph in the argument on this show since Ole Miss bought four Power 4 starters for that secondary — the spending segment, the NFL draft segment, the Pick Six segment. He hasn't been a national story and he's barely been a local one. Nobody asked Golding about him; Golding said so himself. When a coach volunteers a name nobody asked for, that's the least filtered thing he says all week. 🏈 Why it matters: Miami was better on the line of scrimmage partly because Ole Miss was protecting the back end. But the thing that actually decided that game was a coverage bust and a missed tackle in the secondary. Pick Six has Ole Miss defensive backs 7th in the SEC — the only unit outside its own league's top five. The head coach just pointed at the answer. 📋 19 drives, and "most games are lost, not won." Across every one of them, every explosive play on offense and every negative play on defense came from a bust or a mental error — not a contested rep. Stack that with Bryan Brown saying the scrimmage was in the stadium with no coaches on the field , and you have two coaches describing the same finding from two chairs. 🗓️ And the detail nobody caught: they're scrimmaging on Sundays — because the first game is on a Sunday. This staff is resetting the entire rhythm of a game week in the middle of August. Plus four words on the AP poll worth memorizing, and why Golding sounds like a man who isn't overlooking Louisville. Pete Golding named Edwin Joseph on Tuesday as the player nobody's asking about. Today I got to ask the one man in America who has actually watched him play. Steven Willis is joined by Brian Smith of Locked On The Portal — who also operates Locked On Seminoles , and covered Edwin Joseph at Florida State. IN THIS EPISODE: 🎯 The scouting report. Joseph came out of Chaminade Madonna in South Florida — a program that wins state titles almost every year, and where Jeremiah Smith played. A four-star on the 247 composite, recruited by Auburn, Louisville, Penn State and straight down the list. Nobody was sure whether he'd end up at receiver, corner or safety, because he's just a really good athlete. Brian's read: single high, in the box, at nickel — he can run. And he's physical; contact doesn't bother him. 🧩 Why he might be better here. Florida State completely changed its defense last season under Tony White , and that scheme is zone-heavy and built to confuse — the safety lines up somewhere different against identical personnel, and the whole goal is making the quarterback throw it to the wrong team. It's a lot of information, and Brian's honest take is that it produced four or five great plays and then a coverage bust. His framing on the switch: like being an IndyCar driver and trying a different kind of racing. His advice on Joseph: don't cloud him too much. 🛡️ Joseph and Aguero together. They're similar players who'll both be free safeties at different times — put them on the field together and you disguise everything while keeping it simple, because nobody knows which one is the free safety. Brian's read on what that says about Golding's plan: stuff the run first, then create havoc in the backfield. Because you're going to give up explosive plays no matter what, so you'd better create some of your own. 📉 Is Ole Miss the drop-off team? Somebody on Brian's show said yes. He disagrees — he's got Ole Miss 9-3, in the Playoff or just outside. And here's the one factor that actually predicts a top-10 collapse: an overhyped quarterback. That's not Trinidad. Plus two future Ole Miss quarterbacks facing each other in a high school game on ESPN2, and why practice in Oxford is locked down tighter than it ever was under Kiffin. 🚨 THE OLE MISS HUB IS LIVE MONDAY — the show, Locked On Ole Miss Hits, the Everyday Club, the private Discord, the newsletter free at noon and daily links every morning: olemisshub.com ⭐ THE EVERYDAY CLUB — ad-free, members-only Discord, 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 💬 FREE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/KF3dtcQJhC 🎧 Follow Brian Smith at Locked On The Portal and Locked On Seminoles. Bryan Brown didn't tell us what the first scrimmage looked like. He told us what it was for — and once you hear it, the whole thing makes sense. IN THIS EPISODE: 🎧 "No coaches on the field." That was the test. Brown said the staff played a lot of players specifically to see the ones who hadn't been in that environment — in the stadium, with nobody out there to help them — to find out who can communicate on their own. Which is why that was an NFL preseason opener: Chambliss took one series, Kewan Lacy barely touched it, Echoles and Perkins sat, and most of the interior line and secondary never played. It wasn't load management. It was a diagnostic to make sure your depth is actually your depth. 📡 From the box to the field. The detail nobody caught: Brown is coaching from upstairs this season with Golding calling the defense from the sideline — "his eyes in the sky." That's a communication chain that didn't exist a year ago, and they were rehearsing it in an empty stadium in mid-August. Teams normally save that for the weekend before the opener. Everybody was watching which backup made a play. The coordinator was listening to whether his headset worked. 🎯 Deuce Knight was the star, and the comparison is the story. In spring, Harry Harrison called him a "one-hit wonder" who threw to the first receiver regardless. This weekend he found the hot receiver against the blitz and worked his progressions. Plus Carius Curne at right tackle, Terrez Davis on the left, Brady Prieskorn as TE3, and Keaton Thomas — now four separate sources in seven days. 🏆 And a 2004 memory. Ole Miss is 9th in the AP poll and I'm not playing the disrespect card — because there isn't one to play. But I am saying something bigger: there's a legitimate chance this program just found its Kirby Smart. IN THIS EPISODE: 👑 Nine is fair — and the bigger claim underneath it. Ole Miss finished No. 3 in the final AP poll last season after 13-2 and a Playoff semifinal. But this team has a head coach with exactly three games at this level and a brand-new coordinator. Voters split the difference. Here's what I keep coming back to: two of those three games were Playoff wins , and Pete Golding has passed every single test in front of him — December, January, spring, and now this. He's earned the benefit of the doubt. Plus the distinction that matters: fair isn't the same as right. Nine is fair for August. Three might be right in December. 🔁 The receipt that walked in yesterday. Brett Ciancia of Pick Six Previews — who researches all 68 Power 4 teams himself, 15th season — was skeptical of the Playoff call a year ago on this show. He came back and said he's fully on board. He landed at #10. The AP landed at #9. Two separate processes, one spot apart. 🧩 The unit rank that explains everything. Quarterback 1st in the SEC and 1st nationally. Running back 2nd. Linebacker 5th nationally. Offensive line 4th. Defensive line 5th and 11th, with Will Echoles back after leading all Power 4 defensive tackles with 39 QB pressures. Receivers and tight ends 5th and 14th. And defensive backs: 7th in the SEC — the only unit outside the top five of its own league. 🚨 The only ranked-vs-ranked game in Week 1. Louisville is 24th and better than that — Pick Six has them 19th and picks them for the ACC title game. And the detail that stopped me cold: last season Louisville beat No. 2 Miami by intercepting Carson Beck four times. Yes, that Carson Beck. Louisville's secondary did what Ole Miss couldn't in the Fiesta Bowl — four times. 🚨 THE OLE MISS HUB LAUNCHES IN A COUPLE OF DAYS. ⭐ THE EVERYDAY CLUB — ad-free episodes, members-only Discord, 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 💬 JOIN THE FREE LOCKED ON OLE MISS DISCORD: https://discord.gg/KF3dtcQJhC Locked On Ole Miss is your daily Ole Miss Rebels podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network. A year ago I told him Ole Miss would be a playoff team and he didn't believe me. This week he came back and said he's fully on board. Steven Willis is joined by Brett Ciancia of Pick Six Previews — who researches all 68 Power 4 teams himself, talking to head coaches and coordinators, now in his 15th season. IN THIS EPISODE: 🤝 The reversal. Brett opens by saying it out loud: you called it, I was skeptical, and this time I'm fully on board. What changed his mind — how Ole Miss bonded and played for Pete Golding in December and January after Kiffin left, and the offseason moves he liked even more. Where he landed: Ole Miss #4 in the SEC, #10 in the country, 9-3, and in his playoff bracket. Plus Chambliss and Lacy on his first-team All-America squad, and Deuce Alexander third-team All-SEC. 🐯 He's picking Ole Miss over LSU. Brett says that's the key one — beat Kiffin in his return to Oxford and Ole Miss takes the fourth SEC playoff spot. And he only attends one game a year in the entire country: Alabama-Georgia two years ago, Texas Tech-BYU for GameDay last year. This year he's trying to book Oxford , and he calls Ole Miss-LSU the game of the year in America. 🧠 The Baker receipt. The one fact nobody looked up: John David Baker is the man who recruited Jaxson Dart out of USC — the move that changed this program's trajectory — and he was Charlie Weis Jr.'s co-coordinator for two years. Brett says the hire answered his single biggest question about this team, and points at East Carolina: a bottom-10 offense in America when Baker took over, top 25 within a year, and a second top-25 offense stacked on top of it. Plus the Air Raid screen game and getting Kewan Lacy into space. 🛡️ From 40th to 25th. Golding signed eight four-star transfer defenders and landed the No. 2 overall transfer class. Brett has the linebacker room 5th nationally and the defensive line in his top 15. Why Blake Purchase leaving Oregon says more than you think, and why Johntay Cook is one of only two players who ever made Steven's jaw drop at the Under Armour game. 🚨 THE OLE MISS HUB IS ALMOST HERE. ⭐ THE EVERYDAY CLUB — ad-free episodes, members-only Discord, 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 💬 JOIN THE FREE LOCKED ON OLE MISS DISCORD: https://discord.gg/KF3dtcQJhC 📕 Pick Six Previews — Brett Ciancia, @PickSixPreviews. ESPN just put Ole Miss in the same tier as Georgia and Ohio State. Not near them. Not "in the conversation with" them. In it. IN THIS EPISODE: 👑 The tier. Jordan Reid didn't just rank teams — he stacked them into tiers by how much 2027 draft talent is on each roster. Twelve teams made it, and Ole Miss is in the same tier as the two programs that have simply owned the last decade of this sport. Why that's different from a poll: a coaches poll is people voting on what they think will happen; a draft board is professional scouts telling you what is physically in the building. And talent accumulation is the only thing that repeats — records don't, schedules don't, health doesn't. 🧠 The Jimmies and the Joes. Here's why this list matters this specific year . New offensive coordinator. A head coach with exactly three games at the Division I level. So the talent has to carry it — and we've been told for thirty years that the Jimmies and the Joes matter more than the X's and O's. This is the test case. Perkins, Keaton Thomas, Echoles, Lacy, Chambliss, Aguero, Joseph. And the part that makes it work: the best players are also the best dudes on the team. 📊 Draftable is the bar. Nine Rebels named, five in the back seven. Everybody's going to see "Day 3" and shrug — that's exactly backwards. How many Ole Miss defensive backs had a draft grade a year ago? None. Not one. Now there are four. Roughly 250 players get drafted a year out of about 100,000 playing college football. ESPN didn't argue with me; ESPN quantified me. 🏟️ Two out of sixteen. Progressive is coming to the field at Vaught-Hemingway. More than a dozen schools nationally — and exactly two in the SEC. Georgia and Ole Miss. What that says about reach, television inventory, and Keith Carter's national-brand build. Plus the honest part: it's reported, not announced. 🚨 THE OLE MISS HUB GOES LIVE AROUND AUGUST 24 — one place for everything Locked On Ole Miss.
