Kansas State might have a NEW RB1. Of everything we saw in the Wildcats' 71-3 win over Nicholls, Rodney Fields Jr. might have been the biggest surprise. Because he didn't simply play well. He STARTED. Fields received 14 carries and turned them into 101 yards and a touchdown, showing the vision, decisiveness and explosiveness that apparently stood out to Collin Klein once Kansas State started going live during camp. Now we have a serious question. Is Rodney Fields becoming Kansas State's No. 1 running back? Joe Jackson isn't going anywhere. Jay Harris is still going to have a role. And after watching all three backs contribute against Nicholls, Kansas State might have something even better than one clear starter. This could legitimately become a three-headed monster. We break down the entire Kansas State offense after Collin Klein's first win, including an extremely encouraging performance from Avery Johnson. Johnson completed 15 of 21 passes for 199 yards and three touchdowns while adding another score on the ground. But the numbers weren't even the most impressive part. He looked comfortable. He looked confident. And in his first game reunited with Collin Klein, Avery looked like a quarterback completely in control of the offense. We also discuss Kansas State's offensive line after an encouraging first performance from a group that entered the season with plenty of questions. Ryan Howard stepped into the opening at left tackle. Charlie Adams impressed. And Avery Johnson was consistently given time to operate. Yes. It was Nicholls. Washington State is going to tell us significantly more about this team. But Kansas State did exactly what it was supposed to do in Week 1. Is Special Teams U officially BACK at Kansas State? John Grove called his shot. All offseason, he told us Kansas State was going to score a special-teams touchdown. It took ONE GAME. Brandon White took a punt to the house against Nicholls, showing off the ridiculous speed that made him one of the most intriguing additions to this Kansas State roster. And maybe this was about more than one touchdown. Kansas State has an incredible history of winning games with special teams. Since 1999, K-State has 140 non-offensive touchdowns. Since 2005, Kansas State has 64 kickoff and punt-return touchdowns — far ahead of anyone else in college football. That was a massive piece of the Bill Snyder identity. Now, in the first game of the Collin Klein era and this push toward the “new old school,” Kansas State immediately gets another one. Coincidence? Maybe. But it sure felt like Kansas State football. And Brandon White could become a serious weapon. We also dive into a Kansas State defense that gave us plenty to be excited about. Darian Whitaker Jr. looked completely at home in his new role along the defensive line. Logan Bartley impressed. Gabe Powers gave us more confidence in the linebacker room. JoJo Scott showed some serious potential in the secondary. And Wendell Gregory gave us our first look at what he could become in this defense. Yes, we have to keep saying it. This was Nicholls. Washington State will be a much bigger test. Tulane will be a bigger test. Eventually, Big 12 play will tell us what this Kansas State team really is. But this is exactly what you're supposed to do against an opponent like Nicholls. Dominate. Get younger players on the field. Build confidence. The Collin Klein era at Kansas State is officially underway. Yeah... That'll work. Kansas State absolutely demolished Nicholls 71-3 in Klein's first game as head coach, giving the Wildcats their highest-scoring performance since putting 76 on Ball State in 2000. And while Nicholls certainly isn't going to be the toughest opponent Kansas State sees this season, there was a LOT to like about this debut. Start with Avery Johnson. 15-of-21. 199 passing yards. Three passing touchdowns. Another touchdown on the ground. And for everyone who spent the offseason questioning Johnson's accuracy? How does a 71% completion percentage sound for Game 1? Then there's the running game. Kansas State finished with more than 300 rushing yards and SIX different players scored rushing touchdowns. But maybe the biggest surprise was Rodney Fields Jr. Fields got the start and finished with 100 rushing yards on 14 carries. Joe Jackson scored. Jay Harris contributed. Ontario Elston broke a 46-yard run. Kansas State suddenly might have a very interesting problem in that running back room. Then there's the offensive line. After all the questions surrounding that group entering the season, Kansas State didn't allow a single sack. Again, it's Nicholls. Keep everything in perspective. But this is exactly what you're SUPPOSED to do against an overmatched opponent. Dominate. Get your starters out. Give younger players meaningful snaps. Build some confidence. And move on. Even special teams got involved, with Brandon White taking a punt 65 yards to the house. Kansas State wasn't perfect. And we'll learn significantly more against Washington State, Tulane and eventually Cincinnati. But after some of the ugly nonconference performances we've watched from this program recently, there was no drama this time. Collin Klein's first win? Check. Avery Johnson looking comfortable? Check. Offensive line protecting the quarterback? Check. Young players getting valuable reps? Check. 71-3? Yeah. Kansas State football is BACK. In less than 24 hours, Collin Klein will lead the Wildcats onto the field at Bill Snyder Family Stadium for the first time as Kansas State's head coach. And against Nicholls, the question isn't really whether Kansas State should win. They absolutely should. The question is what we LEARN while watching them do it. What does a Collin Klein-coached team look like? How different does the offense feel? And most importantly: Are we finally going to see Avery Johnson UNLEASHED? One more day. That's all that's left before Kansas State football officially begins the Collin Klein era. So for the FINAL time this offseason, we're doing what we've spent months doing: Speculating. John Grove from GoPowerCat joins the show as we go game-by-game through Kansas State's entire 2026 schedule and make our final predictions. And I'm starting to feel pretty good about what Year 1 could look like. Nicholls? Win. Washington State? Win. Tulane? Win. I even think Kansas State can go on the road and beat Cincinnati to begin Big 12 play and start the Collin Klein era 4-0. John isn't quite as confident. Then things get REALLY interesting. Houston might be the most important game on Kansas State's entire schedule. The Sunflower Showdown returns to Manhattan. There's a difficult trip to Arizona State. Colorado awaits on Halloween. And the final month brings Oklahoma State, TCU, Arizona and potentially the final Farmageddon against Iowa State. And I feel extremely confident about two games in particular: Collin Klein beats Kansas AND Iowa State in his first season. Are people finally starting to BUY STOCK in Kansas State? Because after an offseason filled with questions surrounding Collin Klein's first season back in Manhattan, the conversation around the Wildcats might finally be starting to change. Locked On Big 12 recently admitted Kansas State may have been ranked too low entering the 2026 season, pointing specifically to some of the top-end talent on this roster. And they're right about one thing. Kansas State has some legitimate dudes. Wendell Gregory has the talent to potentially become the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. Joe Jackson broke Darren Sproles' Kansas State freshman rushing record last season. Garrett Oakley has already shown he can be one of the better tight ends in college football. And then there's Avery Johnson. I've been more cautious about Kansas State this offseason than I was a year ago. But there's one thing I feel VERY confident about. Avery Johnson is going to have the best season of his college career. Putting him back together with Collin Klein could completely change what this Kansas State offense looks like. And apparently people around the Big 12 are starting to see the potential too. Here's the weird part. While the perception surrounding Kansas State might be improving, its Big 12 championship odds have actually moved in the opposite direction. K-State went from fourth in the conference at +1200 to fifth at +1700 in the odds we discussed on today's show. So is THAT the opportunity? Is everybody still sleeping on Kansas State? Kansas State's first defensive depth chart is here. And there are a LOT more surprises than I expected. Jon Grove of GoPowercat joins Locked On Kansas State to break down Collin Klein's first defensive depth chart before the Wildcats open the season against Nicholls. It starts up front. Wendell Gregory and Jordan Allen are expected to start on the edge, but there are some notable names missing from the two-deep — including Elijah Hill. Instead, Darian Whitaker Jr. and Jayden Bryant have earned early opportunities. Then there's the linebacker room. Mekhi Mason has officially earned a starting job after receiving significant praise throughout the offseason. Gabe Powers will join him after emerging as both a starter and team captain. But Rex Van Wyhe isn't currently listed as a starter despite representing Kansas State at Big 12 Media Days. The biggest surprises might be in the secondary. Sophomore JoJo Scott won the starting nickel job. Gus Hawkins has 126, while Charlie Adams is currently the most experienced member of that projected starting five. That's a LOT of development that needs to happen quickly. The good news? Big 12 football could be completely wide open in 2026, but Kansas State may have a major concern as Week 1 approaches. Texas Tech entered the offseason as the team to beat, but questions at quarterback have opened the door for BYU, Kansas State and the rest of a conference where seemingly anyone can beat anyone. Both Mike Giddens and I currently lean toward BYU as the Big 12 favorite over Texas Tech. But how confident should Kansas State fans be right now? Avery Johnson is back. Collin Klein is taking over. Brandon White continues generating buzz. There are plenty of reasons to believe in the Wildcats. The concern is the offensive line. There are rumblings of potentially significant injuries up front, and while nothing had been confirmed at the time of recording, it's enough to change how I'm looking at Kansas State entering the season. If the Wildcats can't consistently protect Avery Johnson, all those weapons suddenly become a lot less important. In fact, with Kansas State's win total sitting at 8.5, I'm currently leaning UNDER.
